Comparison

Paper vs digital stamp cards: an honest comparison

Paper loyalty cards are cheap, familiar and work without any tech. Digital stamp cards cost a little more but fix the things paper can't. Here's how they compare, and when each makes sense.

Where paper still wins

Paper is simple. There's nothing to set up, no monthly cost beyond printing, and every customer understands it immediately, including those without smartphones. If you run a market stall, only want a light-touch thank-you for regulars, and don't care who your regulars are, paper is fine.

Where paper quietly costs you

The real cost of paper cards is invisible. Cards get lost or forgotten, so customers with half-full cards stop feeling the pull to come back. Some go through the wash; some sit in a drawer. Every one of those is a relationship that goes cold without you knowing.

Paper also gets gamed. A lookalike stamp, a friendly barista adding an extra stamp in a rush, a customer finding a stack of blank cards: each free reward that wasn't earned is margin gone. And because paper carries no data, you can't tell whether your loyalty program is working at all.

What changes with a digital card

A digital stamp card keeps the part customers like, a simple goal and a reward, and fixes the rest. The card is on their phone, where it can't be lost. Stamps can only be added by your staff, and the code on the card rotates so it can't be copied. You see how many stamps and rewards you're issuing, and you can message the people holding your card, for example a welcome when they join or a nudge after a few weeks away.

With Eazistamp there's no hardware: staff stamp from a phone or tablet, and customers scan one printed QR code to join. There's no app for them to download either. The card opens in the browser and saves to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

Making the switch

  • Set up your digital card with the same goal and reward customers know.
  • Put the QR code by the till and tell customers as they pay.
  • Honour paper cards: staff can add existing stamps when a customer joins, then retire the paper card.
  • Stop reprinting paper after a few weeks.
